Carrie Underwood’s performance in NBC ‘s The Sound Of Music Live has certainly been a controversial one. She received mixed reviews and some harsh criticism for her portrayal of Maria von Trapp, but this hasn’t fazed her in the slightest.
Underwood tweeted an unusual response to the critics:
Plain and simple: Mean people need Jesus. They will be in my prayers tonight… 1 Peter 2:1-25

It wasn’t just the general public that weren’t sold on Underwood as Maria; some of the comments regarding her performance came from people who know The Sound of Music inside out. Kym Karath, who played Greti von Trapp in the 1965 musical film, made this comment during the live screening;
Mystified & disappointed so far by SOM special. So far only happy with Stephen Moyer.

Love Carrie Underwood but this role is just not right for her. She is lovely her voice is beautiful but acting is wrong.

In an attempt to soften the criticism, Karath continued:
To be clear I love Carrie Underwood. Just not as Maria. She was brave to take it on.And this doesn't lessen my respect for her talent.

It wasn’t all bad though, as others, including Cameron Diaz, applauded her efforts, pointing out that setting herself up to be compared to Julie Andrews was a gutsy move. Moreover, Underwood was surrounded by those who are very experienced, especially compared to her limited acting resumé.
@carrieunderwood you did an amazing job Gurl. What a brave thing to do. #climbeverymountain

Clearly, her performance wasn’t totally unbearable, as NBC had its best non-sport ratings for a Thursday since the 2009 ER finale. Not to mention all the responses to Underwood’s tweet, all overflowing with as much positivity and support as possible in a 140 character limit.
