Unbroken, a movie based on Laura Hillenbrand’s novel, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption is welcoming a Carrie alum aboard. Alex Russell has signed on to star in the Angelina Jolie directed film. Russell is best known for his roles in The Host, Chronicle, and the remake of Carrie.

The film tells the account of an Olympic runner, Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell), who was captured by the Japanese while he was serving in the Air Force during World War II. Inside Film reports Russell will play Louis’ brother, Pete. Pete played a very integral part in inspiring his brother to become a track star.

In order to prepare for this movie, Russell had to lose a significant amount of weight. In an interview with WENN Russell states, “I kind of feel if I hadn’t lost the weight we would have found a way around it, so this is a choice I made to be more authentic.” Many actors have recently shocked the industry with their extreme weight loss for roles; a great example of this is Jared Leto and Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club.

Filming is set to begin for Russell within the next two and a half weeks. Joel Cohen, Ethan Coen and Richard LaGravenese wrote the screenplay adaptation. Also set to star in the movie is Domhnall Gleeson of the Harry Potter franchise, and Garrett Hedlund from Tron.

As previously stated Angelina Jolie is set to direct the film. This is going to be Jolie’s third crack at the director’s chair. She previously directed the documentary, A Place in Time and feature film, In the Land of Honey and Blood.

Until Unbroken hits theatres, fans of Alex Russell can catch him in the re-creation of Carrie.
