Chris Pratt initially passed on Marvel’s half-alien, half-human Peter Quill, a.k.a. the Star-Lord, in Guardians of the Galaxy.
In an Esquire interview for September’s issue, he said the reason behind it is because he feared making the same failure he made before, when auditioning for a G.I. Joe role a few years ago.
Pratt says, “When Guardians of the Galaxy was pitched to me, I said, ‘I don’t think so.’ I just didn’t picture myself getting the role. I didn’t want to go and embarrass myself like I did when I auditioned for G.I. Joe a couple of years previously…I was a little heavy and out of shape…I did not look like a G.I. Joe action figure come to life.”
However, for this role, he made a change: he got in shape. And this change has made him feel like a real-life superhero.
“I can do 40-inch box jumps now. Action-hero physical stuff,” he says. “When you get in shape, the world around you becomes things you wanna jump on and climb up.”
