ChrispyD Talks “Lonely Nights” & Artistic Influences

“…you’re not alone in feeling alone.”

They say when you have a goal and a genuine passion for something you should follow your heart and just go for it. That’s exactly what ChrispyD did when he decided to drop out of school and pursue his one true passion – music. With 100,000 monthly listeners on Spotify to his name, and having just unveiled his latest single “Lonely Nights”, PopWrapped caught up with him to find out about the inspiration behind the song, how he’s been coping with the pandemic over the last year and what to expect from him in the coming months.

You dropped out of school to pursue music as a career – what was your family’s opinion on and reaction to that?

I wasn’t going to school much before leaving, so I think my folks saw the writing on the wall. They were supportive and I’m extremely blessed to have parents who believed I could.

What was that first year like, as you began to actively pursue and look to make music a full-time thing?

I was working on my writing a lot that first year after dropping out. I didn’t understand the business side at all, in fact, I did nothing to advance my career other than improve my writing that first year.

Which bands or artists, past and present, would you say most influence your music?

Modern artists who helped influence me include but are not limited to Kid Cudi, VIC MENSA, & Blackbear. Past influences include the Beatles, Counting Crows, Train & many more.

Was your new single “Lonely Nights” pre-conceived or did the topic sporadically come up from a way you were feeling?

It was neither pre-conceived or sporadic. I wrote to the beat for weeks, refining and making changes. I did not know the song would be called “Lonely Nights” until I was almost finished writing it.

Is there any specific idea or message you want those who hear “Lonely Nights” to take from it?

Yes. The message being you’re not alone in feeling alone.

Did you work on “Lonely Nights” with DECAP, Gyrefunk, & Nox Beatz in the studio, or virtually due to Covid?

DECAP & Gyrefunk made the beat together back in 2017. Nox Beatz & I worked in person to record & mix the record.

Your sound has changed quite a bit across your releases. How has that diversity impacted your creative process?

My process has changed since I started doing pop, country, rock and more. Each genre has different nuances and vibes that I try to take into account when creating.

How have you found the last year to be? Has the Covid pandemic and much of the world being shut down affected you negatively in any way or have you found ways to stay motivated?

The first few months were tough. In the past I had written based on life experiences, and all of a sudden, my life was paused. I had to dig deep and find ways to manufacture motivation. Starting with concepts were a key part of getting my writing going again as I was having very little interaction with the outside world.
