Coldplay frontman Chris Martin recently sat down with radio presenter Zane Lowe of BBC Radio 1 in a tell- all interview. He alluded to what caused the end of his relationship to Academy Award-winner Gwyneth Paltrow, the bond between him and his bandmates, his thoughts on their new album Ghost Stories, and his admiration for boy band One Direction including what may be referred to as a man crush on one of its members.

In talking about the end of his relationship, Chris Martin revealed his state of mind at that point of his life: “If you don’t open yourself up then you can’t appreciate the wonder outside. So you can be with someone very wonderful, and because of your own issues. You cannot let that be celebrated in the right way.” He added, “And about two years ago, I was a mess, really because I can’t enjoy the thing that we’re good at, and I can’t enjoy the great things around me.”

Chris Martin also talked about his bandmates and their group dynamic, “The more that time goes on , the more I appreciate the chemistry of our group, the four of us “ he said “ We’re very very tight at the moment. I know I’m the one, that is the frontman, and the one that’s on the magazines and stuff but the mechanics of it are very equal in terms of holding each other up. And so I think for all the trappings of everything we’ve been blessed with. What we constantly come back to is this relationship.”

He described Coldplay’s newest album, Ghost Stories, “ Ghost Stories for me… was how do you let the things that happen to you in the past – your ghosts –how do you let them affect your present and your future … it’s basically 42 minutes on an emotional treadmill”

He also went on to reveal that one of their biggest hits, Paradise of their fifth studio album Mylo Xyloto, was not really meant to be released as a Coldplay single. “That was came from being asked about the (UK) X-factor , winner’s song. Then I played it to Will, the (Coldplay’s) drummer and he said ‘no ,no we’ll have that’ …If Will ever says that , then I listen.”

Speaking of the X-factor, Chris Martin also talked about his admiration for arguably the most successful alumni of the British reality show.  “I think One Direction is the biggest band in the world,” he said when interviewer Zane Lowe praised Coldplay for being the biggest band in the world at the moment. He explained why he thought so, “I’m saying that One Direction are brilliant, and I’m not kidding. You know why? Because their songs are really good. And I don’t think any of them are going solo… I think they appreciate their chemistry, from watching their movie.”

When asked by Lowe what kind of advice he would give to One Direction, Chris gave a cheeky answer: “Yeah well Harry has come to a couple of our shows, and I think I probably said the same thing about chemistry, I can’t really remember, I was too enamoured with his haircut.” He then joked, “I’m pretty sure I was a straight guy before.”

Coldplay’s latest album will be released on May 16, and they will be playing on BBC Radio 1’s big weekend in Glasgow on May 24. Check out the full interview on BBC Radio 1, or watch Part 1 below!
