Devin Kennedy talks “Happy Yet”, social pressure, and more.

Emerging artist Devin Kennedy is making his return with his brand new single, “Happy Yet“, the new track from Devin talks about societal pressures while being in the spotlight and not being sold on the progress that has been made thus’ far.

Not stopping him, Devin is sure to eventually reach the happiness that he has been in search of for quite sometime. Devin tells us, “I’m so excited to finally have this song out! Though I’m making a conscious effort to try and be better about it {social comparisons}, this is something that hits almost every day…sometimes more than once a day. It feels like every time I scroll Instagram I’m watching people grow and succeed, and it’s not that I don’t think they deserve it, because anyone who’s working hard deserves success, it’s just hard not to ask the question, “why not me?”.

Though it’s unhealthy, I place a lot of weight on “public opinion”..or maybe “social opinion” is more accurate. What’s helped is reminding myself that we really only see the positive side of everyone online, and it’s unfair for myself or anyone to hold themselves to only good things.

Last year, Devin released “You & Me, That’s Enough” which is a collection of love-related, upbeat, tracks — something so different from this track. “I love the songs on “You & Me, That’s Enough”, but they were all written in the first half of 2019. I’m a different person now, and the beauty of creativity and making music is that it changes with you. In the last year I’ve grown up and settled into post-college-full-time-musician-life, made new friends, lost old friends, overworked myself and written a ton of music.”

“Writing more than I ever have before has required me to dig really deep into my personal life. It’s shed some light on traits and vices that I’ve let consume me over the last few years, comparing myself to people online being one of them. All of this combined has made for a new level of reliability within my solo songs. I’m excited to keep sharing these stories with everyone on “Happy Yet” and on all the music that’s dropping this year.”

“I wrote “Happy Yet” with two of my insanely talented collaborators Lukas Costas (chord-theory genius) and Rebecca Perl (lyrical genius) last summer. The day we wrote it we all knew it was very special. We were even more excited because it was the first session the three of us ever had together. I told them right away that I wanted this song to be released under my solo project, so we then tweaked it a bit to fit my vibe. With touring, releases and sessions, it took me a couple months to wrap the production on the song. Mostly because I am horrible at time management (working on it) and it takes me forever to call a song done. As I finished the final mix it became clearer and clearer that it needed to be a focus track for me in 2020. I love it.”

Happy Yet” is one of those tracks that anybody can relate to, but if you’re in the public eye like a lot of us, it really puts things into perspective, and if you are someone who holds yourself at a high level and you want such big things for yourself — it really can be a track that is not only deep, but a lesson, and a motivation factor.

“I’ve spent a lot of time evolving this project, finding new sounds that feel like me, trying new concepts and ideas that feel like they’re cohesive with previous tunes I’ve released. The more I write, the more I realize that all I can do is write what’s relevant and honest, and try and articulate it in the most concise way possible. So that means that one day I could write a light and happy love song, and the next I could write “Happy Yet”. My mind is scattered in that way and I’ve learned to love and embrace that creatively. It’s been really exciting to meet/work with more and more talented writers, producers and artists. For my artist project, the plan is to release more music than I’ve ever released before….WAY more. Since November I’ve been scheduling writing camps and sessions 4-5 times a week to write new songs to release under ‘Devin Kennedy’. I’m also working a lot with some crazy talented artists to write for their projects. This has always been something I’ve pursued, but it’s exciting to be growing that side of my creativity and it’s always interesting to camouflage yourself into someone else’s experience and help them put it into words and melody. I’ve got some super exciting collaborations in the works, in addition to some great songs I’ve written/produced on that will be dropping for other artists soon. This is going to be a great year!
