Director Rupert Saunder Plans To Haunt The Ghost In The Shell Remake

Progress seems to finally have been made with the adaptation of Ghost in the Shell; several years after DreamWorks acquired the project. Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders has made a deal with the company to helm the live-action film, based on the Japanese manga futuristic police thriller.

There is a script written by William Wheeler, who previously wrote Hoax, and is set to be produced by Avi Arad, Ari Arad, and Steven Paul.

Masamune Shirow is the creator of Ghost in the Shell, which was published in 1989, by one of the largest publishing companies in Japan, Kodansha. Since then, there have been two additional manga editions, three anime film adaptations, and anime TV series and three videogames.

Naturally, those who love Shirow’s original work are concerned about the outcome of this film, especially with DreamWorks’ ambitious plans, which includes shooting in 3D.  This project has, however, been fuelled by Steven Spielberg’s passion for the material, and seems to, so far, have a strong storyline.

The story focuses on a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission, Motoko Kusanagi, who specialises in fighting technology-related crime.

There is no confirmed, or even rumoured, production date for the project.
