Aaliyah: Princess of R&B is set to start filming in a couple of weeks and Zendaya Coleman has been cast to play the late Aaliyah Haughton.

Aaliyah,  who was affectionately known as “Baby Girl” died in a tragic plane crash in 2001 at the tender age of 22; and although she has now become a mere memory, her legacy will continue to live on in a made for television documentary set to be released on Lifetime later this year. It will be based off of Christopher Farley’s bestselling biography Aaliyah: More Than A Woman.

As you may know, 17-year-old Zendaya is a breakout Disney star, most recently playing Raquel “Rocky” Blue on the hit series Shake It Up. The bay area native was also a runner-up on Season 16 of Dancing With The Stars. As Haughton was known for her angelic voice and original dance moves, it is befitting that an individual playing her role would be unsurpassed in this talent as well.  In addition, Coleman will also record four of Aaliyah’s songs for the film.
