Disney unveiled a brand new princess set to debut on Disney Junior’s Sofia the First, and guess what? She’s a Latina Princess!

Princess Elena of Avalor is 16 years old and will debut in a special episode next year. She will also get a spin-off series of her own, Elena of Avalor. She will be voiced by Dominican actress Aimee Carrero of ABC’s Young and Hungry.

Disney described her as  “a confident and compassionate teenager in an enchanted fairy tale kingdom inspired by diverse Latin cultures and folklore.” They also revealed her backstory: Her parents and kingdom were taken by an evil sorceress, Shuriki. Elena bravely faced the sorceress to protect her little sister, Princess Isabel, and her grandparents. She is now the rightful heir to the throne of Avalor, but she’s so young that she’ll need some guidance. Her sidekicks will include Mateo, a wizard-in-training, and Skylar, a magical flying creature.

I’m so pleased to see Hispanic representation from Disney, especially in an outlet that is targeted to younger children. It’s important to show all girls of all cultures that they can be princesses, and Disney is sending off the right message!
