Doctor Who Music Director Murray Gold Talks “Controversial” 50th!

When he was asked whether there was anything he could tell us about the 50th anniversary, Murray Gold said: “There’s a thing they’ve done in it, which might be controversial…”

To soothe any possible panic, he added: “It’s interesting though!”

He didn’t delve into the specifics. It isn’t even clear what exactly he meant. Is it the kind of controversial that will leave Whovians debating for months? Or is it the kind of controversial that will have conservative politicians pulling out their hair in frustration? For now, all we can do is guess!

In the same interview with Den of Geek, Gold also spoke about Matt Smith’s departure. When he was asked about his first thought when he heard the news, he said jokingly: “Well that means a lot of work!”

Still, he seemed to have other reasons to feel sad to see him go as well: “He’s brilliant regardless of what he’s given to do, which is always good,” he explained. “Matt has a very interesting internal energy, which he allows to show. He’s a child, he’s an old man – everybody knows this. People have had since 2010 to notice this about him. He’s really so good.”

Finally, he also had some good news to share about himself. He is definitely expecting to stay on the show through season eight! Gold has been the musical director since the renewed series began back in 2005, and as your tissues no doubt know, his music has been very successful at touching our emotions!

He is currently working on the music for the 50th anniversary special, which will be aired on BBC One on Saturday the 23rd of November.
