The Whovians of the world can breathe a sigh of relief as The Doctor will be back for an eighth season, according to showrunner Stephen Moffat.

He made the comment at Sunday evening’s TV BAFTAs where the show received a special BAFTA in recognition of the 50th anniversary this year.  Moffatt is quoted as saying “This is a thing that just seems to have slipped by… so can I say it very firmly – series eight is absolutely, definitely confirmed.  It is real and it’s happening – it’s [taking up] most of my time at the moment.”

The eighth season is presumed as starting after the Christmas Special, however no transmission date has been revealed as yet.  Season eight will also see the return of the elusive companion Clara, played by the charming Jenna-Louise Coleman.

There has been no mention regarding the return of Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor.  Could this mean that the anniversary episode in November usher in the age of the 12th Doctor, or is Matt’s return a foregone conclusion?
