Beloved, long scarf-wearing Fourth Doctor Tom Baker has given his approval for current Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat’s casting of the Twelfth Doctor.
“I know Capaldi and… there’s much more to him than that rough fellow he plays [in The Thick of It], Malcolm Tucker,” said Baker, who played the role of the Doctor from 1974 to 1981.
“Take note,” Baker also added, “no one has never failed [as the Doctor]. That’s amazing, isn’t it? So it strikes me as being maybe actor-proof.”
Baker added that he’s sure Capaldi will love the role as much as he did. “It was so much better than real life,” said Baker. “I stayed so long because real life at the time wasn’t so terrific. Being [the Doctor], I used to look at the clock and know at half past four we were going to stop rehearsing – and that was a sad moment for me, because I wanted to stay in this beautiful, unreal world.
Capaldi will appear as the Doctor for the first time in the upcoming 2013 Christmas special.
Doctor Who will return to our screens first on November 23rd for the 50th Anniversary Special, simulcast world-wide.
Baker will appear at the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebration from November 22nd to 24th at London’s ExCel Arena, where he will be joined by Colin Baker, Peter Davison, Sylvester McCoy, and Matt Smith.
