Former Community star Donald Glover has been cast as the voice of Miles Morales, Spider-Man, in the upcoming Disney XD series Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors.
The character itself, on the other hand, was partially inspired by the actor after his Twitter campaign to play as Spider-Man in a live-action film. As a result, Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis created Miles.
Although the upcoming Disney XD series isn’t exactly a live-action film, it’s still special for Glover, who has been a fan of Spider-Man since he was a child.
“I don’t think it’s hit me necessarily yet how big a deal that is,” says Glover. “I’m very grateful for that, and it’s cool to read the comic now. I never liked Superman that much, because I was like, ‘Yo, this dude can’t die. It’s too easy.’ Batman is pretty fly. He’s a close second, just because he doesn’t really have powers. He’s just a justice-driven vigilante. Spider-Man is the best because you just don’t know who he is, and he’s funny and he’s poor. I understand Spider-Man a lot on that level. He’s just trying to make it.”
While Glover is happy to have the opportunity to voice Miles, he still hopes to fulfill his original dream of playing Spider-Man…in a live-action film.
“I still have hopes to do something like that one day. I don’t look at this as second place. Spider-Man, he’s such an icon – you have to do something with him,” he adds.
Donald Glover will debut as Miles Morales in Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors on August 31 at 9 a.m.
