Donald Trump wants the Federal Communications Commission (F.C.C.) to fine Fox News for foul language. No, this is not The Onion.
Rich Lowry, the editor of National Review, was on The Kelly Review with Fox News personality Megyn Kelly on Wednesday (September 22) night. The topic of discussion was the CNN Republican debate, specifically how Carly Fiorina fared against Donald Trump. Lowry made his thoughts on Carly Fiorina’s performance clear:
Let’s be honest. Carly cut his balls off with the precision of a surgeon – and he knows it.
Despite very publicly announcing that he would no longer appear on any Fox News programs, Trump evidently still watches the network quite closely. He took to twitter almost immediately to ensure his followers knew how he felt about Lowry’s comments. Predictably, Trump resorted to personal insults, calling Lowry “incompetent”.

He followed this tweet up with a second tweet on the issue, seeming written without a trace of irony:

The hypocrisy of Trump’s tweet is obvious. Trump has given out the personal cell phone number of a sitting Senator, called people he disagrees with “losers”, and questions their intelligence. The speed with which he responds to valid criticism with personal insults means that most of what Trump says would be “foul language”, according to his own definition.
This hypocrisy was not lost on Lowry, either, who responded to Trump’s tweets with a series of his own:
.@realDonaldTrump I love how Mr. Anti-PC now wants the FCC to fine me. #pathetic

.@realDonaldTrump so it's OK for you to insult Carly's looks, but you can't handle me describing what happened to you in the debate?
— Rich Lowry (@RichLowry) September 24, 2015
.@realDonaldTrump man, you can dish it out but you REALLY, REALLY can't take it
— Rich Lowry (@RichLowry) September 24, 2015
The first of Trump’s tweets on the subject call for the F.C.C. to fine Fox News, presumably for Lowry’s “foul language” referred to in the second tweet. Unfortunately for Trump, this is a situation he won’t be able to insult his way out of. He’s right, in that the F.C.C. does police indecent programming, but their reach is limited to radio and broadcast television. Fox News is on cable television, putting them beyond the reach of the F.C.C.
