Legendary rock group, Blondie, has turned down an opportunity to perform at the Sochi Olympics. Why, you may ask? Human rights.
Frontwoman Debby Harry took to Twitter to send out a picture showing the official offer letter, across which she has written “PASS” and “HUMAN RIGHTS” –the band’s way of criticizing Russia’s discrimination against the gay community. In a statement, Harry says, “We feel very strongly about these friendships and associations, and don’t feel good about participating in a situation where biases and prejudices are paramount.”
The gig would have guaranteed Blondie a 45-minute set on the “main stage of the 25,000-capacity Sochi Medals Plaza.” Not many bands would turn down such an amazing opportunity, so Blondie’s refusal is a pretty powerful symbol of protest.
