DoSomething.org Encourages Youth To Write ‘Love Letters’ For The Elderly

DoSomething.org has launched its second annual Love Letters campaign, encouraging young volunteers to create Valentine’s Day cards for the elderly.

Everyone typically associates Valentine’s Day with buying teddy bears and roses for our significant others, or finally making a move on our crushes.

However, charity organization DoSomething.org’s second annual Love Letters campaign takes the day a step further. They’ve teamed up with AARP Foundation’s Mentor Up once again, the goal being to encourage youth to write love letters for the elderly in an effort to raise their spirits. A surprising amount of older adults deal with loneliness consistently, and these handmade cards are an inspired way to ease that.

The Meals on Wheels Association of America delivers meals to the elderly who are forced to remain at home because of limited mobility, and the cards would be included with the meals.

“I cannot begin to express the immense impact of the Love Letters campaign on the seniors we serve. Together, the nationwide network of Meals on Wheels programs and thoughtful DoSomething.org volunteers can lift the spirits of thousands of isolated seniors again this year,” President and CEO of the Association, Ellie Hollander, said.

China Anne McClain, star of Disney’s A.N.T. Farm, has also put in the time to support this great cause. “I was interested in being involved as soon as I heard about the Love Letters campaign because the concept was so sweet and original. I love doing things like this and making people smile, so I thought the idea was just perfect,” the 16-year-old explained.

Volunteers can sign up on DoSomething.org’s official website. Once they’ve submitted a photo in order to prove they’ve carried out their good deed, they will be entered in a contest for a $10,000 scholarship.

The deadline for the campaign is Sunday, February 15.
