Twitter just exploded—and no, this is not a drill! English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has recorded the ending track for the second installment of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Sheeran gained a wider following in the US in 2012 when he guested on Taylor Swift’s Red album and wrote duet songs for One Direction. He has since been nominated for Song of the Year at the 2013 Grammy Awards for his work on The A Team. He even performed with Elton John in the opening ceremonies!

His second original album will be released February 2014.

Sheeran confirmed via his Twitter activity that he has recorded the end credits song for Desolation of Smaug. The song, “I See Fire,” will go live on iTunes later tonight, and will be Sheeran’s first solo song in two years.

According to Sheeran, all of the instruments on the track are played by him except for the cello. He is sorry to say that it will not be part of his album release in 2014, as it will be part of the DoS original soundtrack. He tweeted his thanks to Peter Jackson: “Big up Peter Jackson and his team for giving me the opportunity.”

Stuart Camp, Sheeran’s manager, answered some fan questions on his own Twitter account soon after Sheeran’s announcement. Camp confirms that the song will be available on iTunes worldwide, but the exact timing has yet to be released.

Camp has promised to post links to the iTunes download once the song is released.

You can hear Ed Sheeran’s new song, “I See Fire,” on iTunes and when The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theaters December 13, 2013
