Sia is an artist. Unafraid to take risks, she bears her soul in each song and video created. With a first listen, her work is an overwhelming mix of sounds, imagery and even texture. Her compositions are revolutionary in style, which can be off-putting. However, the more one experiences her songs, the beauty, soul and depth of her music becomes perfectly clear.
Those statements are true about Sia’s new video for “Elastic Heart.“ Both the setting and the dancers are unusual. The video takes place in a gigantic cage within a dove-white storage facility while Shia LeBouf and Maddie Ziegler (of no relations to yours truly) have a dance-off within that cage. Who knew LeBeouf could dance?
Dressed in nude-colored body suits, dirty and sweaty, the partners face off as if they were Gladiators or wrestlers. LeBeouf and Ziegler seem to be trying to win by slaying each other through screams and stretches. The fast-paced, techno tempo makes their situation exceedingly ominous if not nerve-wracking.
This video and its music might not be to everyone’s taste; however, it’s memorable in its barbarically raw imagery. A hauntingly beautiful piece in its own unique way, there is something honorable about “Elastic Heart,” particularly in the overtones of female empowerment and showcasing strength.
