Known best for her performance as Professor Trelawney in the Harry Potter films and Elinor Dashwood in Sense and Sensibility, it’s a surprise that actress Emma Thompson is “glad to be working at all.”

It is no secret that securing a role as a seasoned actress is difficult. With society’s pressures for icons on the silver screen to be younger and more visually appealing, Thompson understands the struggles of other actors her age.

Thompson also recognizes that actresses of all ages face high expectations from the entertainment industry.

“They have to be this specific model size, and if they get on to the red carpet, they’re all having to walk like models and dress like models. I think the pressure is terrible,” said Thompson.

The actress believes that the distorted body image that plagues many young actresses it is the fault of the managers and agents. If Thompson had been told to reinvent herself in order to save her career when she was in her 20’s she would have defied it.

“I’d have told them where to shove it. I’ve always been a card-carrying feminist. But in those days, I was fierce, fierce, very angry,” said Thompson.

Thompson recently was the cause of controversy because of the “sex handbook” she gave to her 13-year-old daughter. The actress created the book because of the pressure on today’s adolescents when dealing with sex, relationships, and the Internet.

In addition to Thompson’s role in the upcoming Saving Mr. Banks as P.L. Travers, the author behind Mary Poppins, the actress will be performing as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in March.
