Did music duo Daft Punk pull a fast one on national TV last Sunday?
According to Spinr, singer Pharrell Williams sat next to two men in robot helmets and tuxedos, assumed to be musicians Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo in their normal disguise.
However, two other men sitting in the same row congratulated Williams as the trio headed for the stage to collect their awards.
Somehow, the world was led to believe that Daft Punk pulled a switcheroo during the ceremony.
Now that the hysteria has calmed and some investigation has been done, the truth has come to light.
Bangalter and Homem-Christo were exactly where they were supposed to be—under the helmets.
Who were the mystery men, you ask? They were actually Paul Hahn and Cedric Hervet, who assisted in production and writing for Daft Punk’s 2006 film Electroma.
Well, that was anticlimactic.
Moving on!
In case anyone was wondering, the “Get Lucky” hitmakers do actually remove those helmets once in awhile.
They apparently decided (wisely) to avoid a lot of poking, prodding, and awkward questions from TSA agents by dressing down in t-shirts and baseball caps as they caught a flight out of Los Angeles on Tuesday.
In addition to unintentionally pranking the media, Daft Punk won big with Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Record of the Year for “Get Lucky”, as well as Album of the Year and Best Dance/Electronic Album for Random Access Memories.
