Ewan McGregor Cast As Brothers (Plural!) In Fargo

Ewan McGregor has been cast to play dual lead roles – brothers, in fact – on the third season of Fargo, FX’s Emmy-winning anthology series.

What can be better than having Ewan McGregor every week on our TVs? Well, how does having Ewan McGregor playing two roles on one of the best series of our times, sound? Much better, right? Well, it’s happening. Ewan McGregor is relocating to Fargo.

The Scottish actor has been cast to play dual lead roles, brothers Emmit Stussy and Ray Stussy on FX’s Emmy-winning anthology series’ third season.

The brothers could not be more different and their challenging relationship will for sure be the central storyline for the new season of the show. According to FX, Emmit Stussy, nicknamed the Parking Lot King of Minnesota, is a good-looking, self-assured real estate mogul and family man. Ray Stussy, on the other hand, is a balding, pot-bellied, flabby parole officer who has “high school hero, life zero” written all over him. He believes that Emmit is somehow responsible for his pitiful state of affairs.

Unlike the second season of Fargo – set in 1979 and starring Patrick Wilson, Kristen Dunst, Jesse Plemons and Jean Smart – this new season will be more contemporary. It will be set in 2010. Fargo creator, Noah Hawley, spoke to Entertainment Weekly last year about the third season of the show, stating that “There are going to be connections, the way the first year was connected to the movie and the second year was connected to the first, but I think part of the fun is figuring that stuff out and I wouldn’t want to take that away from anybody, There will be definitely things that connect to something in our story.” Fargo’s first season – which featured Billy Bob Thornton, Colin Hanks and breakout star Allison Tolman – was set in 2006.

Ewan McGregor has some experience playing dual roles, as he played both Jesus and the devil in the 2015 feature Last Days in the Desert. McGregor has been pretty busy lately, as he just completed filming his directorial debut, American Pastoral – in which he also stars, alongside Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connelly – in theaters October 28th. He is also filming the sequel to indie cult film Trainspotting, T2: Trainspotting 2 – to premiere next February – as well as the Beauty and the Beast live-action film with Emma Watson, Luke Evans, Emma Thompson, among many others, which will open March 17th, 2017.

Ewan McGregor is the first actor to be cast on the third season of Fargo, which is tentatively scheduled to start production later this year and premiere sometime in 2017.
