Execs To Pull The Plug On Downton Abbey After Season 6

A new report from TV Line states that the upcoming sixth season of wildly popular period drama, Downton Abbey, will be its last.

With a heavy heart, I write…

A new report from TV Line (in which multiple sources have been cited) states that the upcoming sixth season of wildly popular period drama, Downton Abbey, will be its last.

The reason behind the alleged final season is that many cast members’ contracts are up, and they’ve all expressed a readiness to branch out into different projects.

One of those sources went so far as to say that, “You can keep the show going without Matthew and Sybill, but you can’t continue it without the entire Crawley family.”

Earlier this year, esteemed actress, Maggie Smith, announced that next season would be her last as the Dowager Countess. She sparked rumors with her comments, saying that, “They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on. I mean, I certainly can’t keep going.”

Well I can’t see how it could ever go on without Smith, either. She is the heart and soul of the series, as she so often is with any project she’s affiliated with.

On top of all that, Downton‘s creator, Julian Fellowes, has another project in the pipeline, and cannot give his forthcoming drama, The Gilded Age, the attention needed to make it successful while still so ingratiated with the Crawleys.

I had rather hoped that the series would continue for many years to come, but perhaps it’s better this way. As long as this final season isn’t a winding, nonsensical question factory, and we get some good answers, closure and happy endings for our favorite characters, I’ll be satisfied.

Well, “satisfied” may be a strong word. The final season won’t be here for nearly a year and I already miss it. Sundays will never be the same.
