Potterheads can rest assured that the upcoming movie, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, despite not featuring any of the main characters from the Harry Potter books, will be just as inspired as the beloved series. JK Rowling will make sure of that.

“She’s doing it because there’s something really interesting that she wants to create there,” Alfonso Cuarón, director of blockbuster movie Gravity, told Digital Spy.  He also directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban in 2004.

The movie, which takes place 70 years before Harry Potter’s time, will follow Newt Scamander, the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.  Rowling is the confirmed screenwriter, having a huge degree of creative control over the entire project.

Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series,” Rowling explained.  “The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.”

As with the previous Harry Potter movies, David Heyman will be the producer.

Heyman said, “It’s not Harry Potter per se, but the world of Harry. She’s chosen to do so because she felt a need to tell a story. That she’s doing it means that it’s going to be very, very special.
