Now that the two leads have been locked in, or should we say tied to the project, Fifty Shades of Grey is all set to begin filming. Only it has been delayed for a month.
Back when it was announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson would be stepping out as EL James’ hero and heroine, filming was all set to begin in early November. However, following Hunnam’s shock departure earlier this month, production was delayed as they frantically scrambled to find their all-important Christian Grey.
News broke five days ago that Once Upon A Time’s Jamie Dornan had signed on to be Master of the “Red Room of Pain”. However, given the closeness of the initial start date, it seemed unlikely that filming would begin as planned.
Yesterday (October 28), The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that filming on the adaptation of the erotic bestseller had been delayed for a month and would begin on December 2. With this filming set back, it puts into doubt whether the film will be ready for its planned release August next year.
But it appears the delay in filming may not be the only concern in making the August release date. Digital Spy reports that Notes on a Scandal screenwriter Patrick Marber, has been brought in to do a “character-focused rewrite” of Kelly Marcel’s (Saving Mr Banks) original script. How much work needs doing has not been disclosed nor how it could possibly affect production. However, it’s just one more unexpected challenge that has arisen before filming has even begun.
It’s not all bad news for the production though. It was announced late last week that True Blood’s Luke Grimes had signed on to play Christian’s brother Elliot. It also appears that Jennifer Ehle is confirmed to play Anastasia’s mother.
