This is almost too cute to handle.

The Cincinnati Zoo welcomed a new resident early yesterday, April 28.

They live-tweeted and posted to Facebook as Tessa the giraffe gave birth to her third calf in  as many years, just after 1 a.m.

Thane Maynard, director of the zoo, described it all: “So the first thing you see are a couple of hooves sticking out, and I tell you, the first time I saw that I thought ‘I hope this works out’ but they’re born almost like a head-first slide like Pete Rose.”

He said that survival instincts kicked in quickly after the calf was born; despite the 6-foot drop to the ground, she lifted her head to look around her. In Africa, it’s important that newborn animals be able to move as soon as possible with their mothers and herd because of the predators always lurking.

She weighs 120 pounds and is just under 6 feet tall.

Tessa’s first calf, Zuri, was born in 2011. Sadly, she broke her leg at 7 weeks old and had to be euthanized. Lulu, the second calf, was born a year later.

The Cincinnati Zoo has opened a voting process on Facebook to help them name the latest addition to Tessa’s family. They’ll be accepting ideas until Tuesday, and on Thursday the top four names will be released for the public to vote.

Head over to their page to help name the new baby girl!
