Fox Searchlight is developing a biopic on the life of the author of The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Los Angeles Times reports.
At this point in time, the project is called Tolkien, although it is still subject to change.
The biopic will center on Tolkien’s college years at Pembroke College in England in his youth and his time as a soldier during World War I.
The latter majorly influenced both his life and his authorship of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. He lost close friends in the war, and he channeled that experience when creating the fictional worlds he is so well-known for.
Irish screenwriter and Tolkien superfan, David Gleeson is writing the screenplay for the project.
Mirkwood, named after fictional forests within Tolkien’s books, appeared as a possible biopic recently. It would have examined Tolkien’s work as a codebreaker during WWI.
The project was brought to a halt, however, because of protests from the Tolkien estate, known for being very private.
Whether or not the estate will participate in Tolkien remains to be seen.
Film adaptations of Tolkien’s novels have raked in nearly $4 billion across the world over the years.
The latest installment to the collection is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and it’s expected to see significant profit, just like its predecessors. It’s the sequel to 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and debuts in theaters on December 13.
