Fox has announced that it will be dropping its pilot season.
The network’s entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly described the pilot system—where networks test dozens of potential new shows in the spring for the fall season—as “highly inefficient.”
Reilly explained that developing and producing series throughout the year will be “more talent-friendly” and will give Fox “more manoeuvrability and more scheduling and marketing flexibility,” reports Digital Spy
Reilly continued that networks need more time to evaluate shows and producers need more time to make them.
The pilot system has been in effect since 1986, in a “different era… It is nothing short of a miracle talent can produce anything of quality in that environment,” said Reilly.
The chairman insured that Fox already has 24: Live Another Day and Broadchurch remake Gracepoint in the works.
