Frank Cottrell Boyce is the latest writer to be confirmed for Series 8 of Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat, head writer of the series, recently described Boyce as a genius.

Doctor Who is born anew in the mind of a genius! Frank’s script is pure magic – and everything I could have hoped for from the genius behind the Olympics Opening Ceremony!

Cottrell Boyce is an award winning novelist and writer, having penned Children’s books based on the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang stories. Though he is perhaps best  known for having scripted the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony alongside Danny Boyle.

Cottrell Boyce said:

I was flabbergasted to be asked to write an episode – partly because I’ve been so absorbed in the last few series that I’d sort of forgotten that it wasn’t real.

Of all the thrills that pen and paper have brought into my life, there’s nothing that quite compares to the buzz of unlimited possibility that rushes through your fingers and into your brain when you write the words: ‘Interior… TARDIS’.

So he’s a huge Whovian, too? I think we’re in safe hands.

His episode will star a huge cast of child actors, an unusual move for the show, including the voice of children’s cartoon Peppa Pig, Harley Bird.

Doctor Who returns to TV screens on August 23 on BBC One with a simultaneous screening on BBC America. Other confirmed writers are Mark Gatiss, Phil Ford, Peter Harness, Steve Thompson, Jamie Mathieson and Gareth Roberts.
