Harry Potter as Freddie Mercury? Be still my beating heart!
Back in July, PopWrapped reported that Sacha Baron Cohen had dropped out of upcoming the Freddie Mercury biopic. As a Queen fan, this was devastating news. While I find Cohen’s satirical films to be a bit obnoxious, I thought he would play an amazing Mercury. However, due to creative differences (Cohen wanted the biopic to be a dark and truthful recounting of Mercury’s life, where as the surviving members of Queen wanted to keep it light and PG), Cohen decided that he no longer wanted to be a part of the project.
As reported by the Daily Star, the floundering biopic’s producers have turned their focus on Daniel Radcliffe as a potential replacement for Cohen. Apparently, after the creative team witnessed Daniel’s portrayal of poet Allen Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, their interest in the young star was piqued.
Roger Taylor of Queen has said that he and Brian May felt that Cohen would give the film too much of a comedic feel. Taylor told Mojo: “We felt Sacha probably wasn’t right. We didn’t want it to be ajoke. We want people to be moved.” He also commented on the slow process of getting a film to fruition: “I thought the music business was slow, but this has been like swimming in treacle.”
That’s all well and good about the movie, but when are we going to get to hear the promised duets from Freddie and Michael Jackson? That is something to get excited about!
