‘G.I. Joe’ Villain Cobra Commander Claims Key To Springfield, Illinois

Cobra Commander, the well-known villain from ‘G.I. Joe’, was handed the keys to the city of Springfield in Illinois.

It was an odd scene in the office of J. Michael Houston on March 12, as photographers snapped shots of the smiling Springfield, Illinois mayor handing over the key to the city to none other than megalomaniacal terrorist leader, Cobra Commander!

Clad in his trademark blue uniform and steel faceplate helmet, the arch-nemesis of the G.I. Joe team proclaimed:

“Springfielders near and far, I accept your Mayor’s generous gift. And let it be known that I too bring a gift for every man, woman and child of this city that is so near and dear to my heart; an invitation to join with me. Join Cobra!”

No one, however, should truly fear that Springfield is now in the evil clutches of Cobra’s head honcho, or that the mayor has lost his mind. The presentation was all part of a publicity campaign to promote the forthcoming G.I. Joe convention taking place in the city in April.

While you may wonder why the stunt featured Cobra Commander accepting the key instead of a Joe hero, it all makes perfect sense to fans of the franchise. In the comics, Cobra actually did set up a secret base of operations in a town named Springfield!
