Fans of GRR Martin’s books and the television series will know the land beyond The Wall is an unforgiving place. Jon Snow barely made it back, and not without breaking a few oaths. Chris Newman, producer of Game of Thrones, gave fans a behind the scenes look at some of the scenery that inspired the world beyond The Wall.
Newman describes Iceland as providing a “unique and startling and unforgettable landscape.” Just as the Starks of Winterfell pray to the old gods and the new, Newman believes that these gods smile upon the crew when they film. The landscape is so raw and untouched, it’s perfect for the Wildlings’ encampments, and their skirmishes against the Crows (Brothers of the Night’s Watch).
“Because it is so interestingly new, you don’t see things like this in anywhere else in the world. That’s part of the secret of Game of Thrones, is that what we take for granted is just tipped on its head a little bit here.”
Newman is awed by the unchanging, natural beauty of Iceland’s landscape. In this two minute video, he takes us back to previous film sites, showing us the very real, very candid elements the actors and crew must face during filming.
