Girls Producer Jenni Konner Talks All Things Girly

A satire on Saturday Night Live can be a sure proof of the popularity of a new television show.  The recent SNL send-up of HBO’s Girls is only one small facet of the series’ impact on pop culture since its debut in 2012.  Co-creator and producer Jenni Konner was happy to spill the beans  recently to Digital Spy on the show’s third season, star Lena Dunham, and growing popularity amongst viewers of all ages and both genders.

Konner reveals what she describes as an unusually pleasant and hassle-free launch of the HBO hit.  Having been a fan of Dunham’s since her indie film Tiny Furniture, Konner jumped at the chance to collaborate with her on a project.  Judd Apatow, described by Konner as a “mentor,” serves as somewhat of an adjunct consultant, admiring the talent and originality of Dunham’s writing.  While the specifics of the pilot were initially vague, the characters evolved and relationships soon took shape into the dynamics that have drawn in viewers from the get-go.

Tackling a variety of subjects and situations relevant to young women in today’s society, Girls has never shied away from material that some may consider off-limits.  Storylines dealing with sex, friendship, and all that comes with it, have allowed the show to flirt with controversy while it entertains.  Konner speculates that this candor and familiar tone is what makes characters such as Hannah and Marnie seem like old friends.

Prone to obvious comparisons to Sex In The City, Girls has created its own splash in the TV world.  Konner acknowledges that this success can be attributed largely to Dunham.  The 27 year-old actress-writer continues to bring a fresh perspective to the newly premiered Season 3 of the show.

Lena Dunham’s recent debut as a Vogue cover girl created a stir of a different kind this week.  When website Jezebel.com leaked proof that certain photos from the uber-fashion magazine were photoshopped, Dunham came under scrutiny.  Some critics blasted her for participating in the shoot, however, the star maintains her pride and individuality for being “just as I am” on the cover of Vogue magazine.

With the launch of Season 3 in the UK, audiences will surely be again reminded why they love Girls. Jenni Korman’s inside look at the workings of the series and what appears to be an inspiring creative enviroment behind-the-scenes, simply reinforces the show’s creative impact.  Now, who says that little girls can’t compete with the big boys?
