Who would have guessed that one of our favorite Glee stars Harry Shum Jr was “very, very shy” growing up! In a recent video from the actor, we learn all about his battle to fit in following his move to the United States from Costa Rica when he was six years old.
The video is has a voice over provided by Ze Frank who calls the narrative he co-wrote with Shum “lovely and honest.”
Touching on how he was “slapped in the face” and “called names,” the video explains how these things led to his shyness, but also how he found freedom through expression in theater and dance. The video ends with a call to anyone who may also feel trapped in a shell saying, “If you, right now, are in a shell, you should know that you’re not alone [and that] you’ll find a way out… You might have to find a passion or a friend, but you will find it. And when you do, it will be so good to see you.”
