Well, the people have spoken, and Entertainment Weekly can now say without a doubt that Klaine (Kurt and Blaine, Glee) are the greatest television couple of all time! Having beaten out the likes of legendary couple like Ross and Rachel (Friends), Marshall and Lily (How I Met Your Mother), Meredith and Derek (Grey’s Anatomy), The Doctor and Rose (Doctor Who), and Buffy and Spike (Buffy The Vampire Slayer), Klaine is now able to call itself the champion!
So what’s the story behind this stellar pairing? The two met in season two episode six of Fox’s smash hit Glee. And of course, in true Glee fashion, it all began with a song. Oh, what a song it was! Darren Criss’ Blaine, backed by the character’s acapella group The Dalton Academy Warblers, performed a bright and bubbly rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream”. The Team StarKid alum swept all of us fans off our feet, and Chris Colfer’s Kurt besides!
Of course, the romance wasn’t completely instantaneous. It took our darling Blaine a few months (and one spectacularly failed attempt to woo another) to work out that he wanted to be with Kurt. They grew as friends, as confidants, as soulmates. From their romantic-platonic “Baby It’s Cold Outside” duet, which has since become a Glee classic, to their infamous “Sexy” plotline the relationship grew and expanded to the point where audiences were left saying “Hello Blaine, we love you, but are you blind?!”
And then…well, then Blaine finally gets it. “You move me,” he says. Cue fangirls squealing and hearts exploding due to an excess of adorableness! And to think, all it took was Kurt singing about a dead bird! From then on it was clear who everyone’s OTP was. Well, maybe not everyone, but the Klaine fandom was going strong from the very beginning.
It still clearly is, I might add, despite the boys’ torturous break-up earlier this season. In the final round of EW’s epic poll, the pairing beat out fan-favorites Rose and The Doctor from Doctor Who. Considering the size and dedication of that fandom, winning was no mean feat!
Perhaps it has something to do with what Klaine, both as a pairing and as individual characters, has done for people. Glee is an inspiration to everyone who has ever felt like an outcast or a freak, and Klaine has been no small part of that. Their love has overcome all kinds of odds, from bullies to brothers to potential competition, and it’s still strong. They may not be back together (yet!) but they’re still best friends. They continue to be the most mature and realistic pairing on Glee, whether romantic or platonic, and they give hope to a whole new generation of young people. When you think about it, it’s really no surprise that Klaine was voted the best couple in television history.
