Good Morning America anchor Robin Roberts came out on Facebook in a post thanking those who have supported her in the past year during her fight with myleodysplastic syndrome. In the post, which you can see here, she says, “I am grateful for my entire family, my long time girlfriend, Amber, and friends as we prepare to celebrate a glorious new year together.” Roberts was diagnosed with (and beat) breast cancer back in 2007, but was then diagnosed with myleodysplastic syndrome last year. The myleodysplastic syndrome required her to get a bone marrow transplant from her sister, today marked the 100 day milestone since the transplant.
Roberts fought both battles publicly and throughout 2012 she gave on air updates, visited the set, and gave video reports to viewers. In 2012, President Obama came out as a straight ally in support of marriage equality, in an interview with Roberts.
According to Variety, Roberts has been in a 10 year relationship with massage therapist Amber Laign. She is not the first on GMA to come out – weatherman Sam Champion came out in October 2012, announcing his engagement.
For those still paying attention, Roberts announcement comes days after A&E lifted Phil Robertson’s suspension for making homophobic, racist, and misogynistic remarks.
