Google Hangouts now provides free calls to North American users, but only to those with the most recent iOS update.
Users in Canada and the United States can now make free calls to each other through the app on the iPod, iPhone or iPad with no additional costs. Customers who have a Google Voice number can make and receive calls within the app over cellular data or wifi. This iOS update is very similar to what what’s offered to Google Hangout users on computers, who have been able to make free calls since July.
International users with Hangouts 1.3 can make phone calls with additional fees. North American users who dial internationally can buy Voice credits to make and receive such calls.
According to sources, other Hangout 1.3 features include the ability to send and receive gifs, as well as temporarily turning down music when receiving a message, instead of completely turning it off.
