When a girl dreams of her perfect prom, she sees herself in a beautiful dress with her hair and makeup done up perfectly and hopefully she’s got the special someone to spend the night with dancing, laughing and just enjoying themselves. But unfortunately, not everyone is that lucky.
For Delores Dennison, she missed her chance at prom decades ago because of familial money issues during the Second World War, but her great grandson Austin wanted to make sure she got to experience the special night. When it came time for Austin to ask a girl to his senior high school prom, he could think of no better date than his great grandmother.
“At first she was a bit resistant,” Austin told Fox News. “I assured her I was serious and she finally said yes. It was my privilege to take her.”
Delores’ apprehension came from the fact she suffered a heart attack and stroke recently, making her a little unsure on her feet, but Austin wouldn’t take no for an answer from his Great Grandmother. She finally agreed!
Being the modest lady that she is, Delores wouldn’t settle for the modern version of the prom dress that many teen girls of today would have chosen. She opted instead for a beautiful turquoise sequinned dress similar in style to the dress she would have worn, had she attended her own prom in the 1940s.
The couple went out to dinner beforehand (Austin treating his great grandmother to her favourite restaurant, Bob Evans) and then danced to Delores’ favourite song, “Delores” by Frank Sinatra; a song her late husband used to sing to her all the time. All in all, Delores and Austin got home after 9pm, later than Delores is used to, but she definitely had a night to remember.
They say you never forget your prom, and thanks to Austin, Delores now has great memories of the prom she deserves. Better late than never.
