‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Sets Box Office Record

Guardians of the Galaxy set the new box office record for the holiday weekend, bringing the office out of its 15% deficit from last season. Well done, Marvel!

Only four weeks after its release, the story of a rag-tag team of space heroes has held onto the top spot on the first day of the holiday weekend.

Since its initial release at the end of July, the intergalactic pic has beat out all other newcomers and is still dominating the box office. This past weekend, Guardians became the summers highest grossing film and before the weekend is over, it will pass fellow Marvel film Captain America: The Winter Soldier and become the highest grossing film of the entire year.

It’s suspected that by the time holiday weekend is over, Guardians will have made a whopping $14 million, bringing its domestic total up to $272.1 million, $2.4 million more than The Winter Soldier’s previous mark.

Passing the $500 million mark worldwide, this is the third win for Guardians. As the highest-grossing movie of the summer, it helped salvage the late summer box office, which was down 15% from last season.

The stunning performance from the brand new franchise with no recognizable characters or household-name lead stars, Guardians has done astonishingly well. With its edgy comedy and – quite frankly – odd characters, including a talking raccoon and sentient tree hero, the action adventure proves to be a favourite with a wide range of people worldwide.

Guardians will only be behind The Avengers, Batman, Iron Man, Spider-Man, X-Men, and Captain America on the list of highest-grossing superhero films of all time, that’s enough to make anyone go “ooga-chaka.”
