Halloween Spotlight: Disney’s ‘Trick Or Treat’

Happy Halloween! If you haven’t yet seen the classic Donald Duck animated short, “Trick Or Treat,” your yearly traditions are about to change!

We’re getting closer and closer to Halloween everybody, and you know what that means? Time to watch scary movies? Well, for some. But like It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (1966), it’s always fun to watch some more lighthearted Halloween fare too.

We all have our yearly holiday traditions, and for this writer, every Halloween, among other things, I watch the classic Disney short Trick or Treat (1952), starring Donald Duck (the great Clarence Nash) and his three nephews. This cartoon deserves more time in the Halloween spotlight.

Watch Trick Or Treat for lighthearted fun

If you’re a traditionalist like me, you love the classic Disney animation cartoon shorts, especially the cantankerous Donald Duck episodes. This phrase often gets overused, but they really don’t make ‘em like this anymore. Interestingly, this year will mark the 65th anniversary of Trick or Treat. In the spooky vein of the other classic Disney short that came out 80 years ago this year, Lonesome Ghosts (1937), all you need to know is that Huey, Duey, and Louie all dress up to go trick or treating on Halloween night, and come up to mischievous Unca Donald’s house. He of course goes for the “trick” instead of the treat, but luckily, a lovable, crafty little witch (with an irresistibly hilarious laugh) soon teaches Donald a lesson he won’t soon forget. The late June Foray provided the voice to Witch Hazel, who sounds remarkably similar to the Looney Tunes Witch Hazel.

The cartoon is an absolute delight from start to finish, with fantastic animation and belly-aching laughs, and a catchy title song to boot, featured a couple of times throughout performed by the Mellowmen.

I urge you to make it part of your yearly Halloween traditions. It’ll only take roughly eight minutes out of your evening; you’ll soon discover that it won’t quite be Halloween without it.

So grab some candy corn and a ghoulish beverage, and check out the cartoon here!
