You’d have to be living under a rock to not know that history has been made today!
In a historical 5-4 victory, the Supreme Court has struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), thus granting same-sex couples over 1,000 rights and benefits that were previously witheld. DOMA was inacted in 1996 and has federally blocked recognition of same-sex couples.
“The ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act means that the federal government must recognize the gay marriages deemed legal by the states — 12, plus the District of Columbia,” according to reports by NBC.
NBC also reported on the Prop8 victory for California, “In a separate case, the court ruled that it could not take up a challenge to Proposition 8, the California law that banned gay marriage in that state. That decision means that gay marriage will once again be legal in California.”
