The stars were out in full force last night (October 19) walking the green carpet at the Environmental Media Awards. The awards recognised those in the industry that not only practice being eco-friendly, but who go above and beyond that by finding ways to “convey environmental messages in the most creative and influential ways”.

Launched in 1991, the Awards celebrate and raise awareness of environmental issues. They have done this in a number of different ways, such as having invented the “green carpet” and encouraging celebrities to travel to the Awards in a hybrid or alternative fuel vehicle.

Last night stars gathered at the Warner Bros. lot in California and were treated to Glee star, Darren Criss, opening the show with a rousing rendition of “What a Wonderful World.” Presenters on the night included Lance Bass, Wilmer Valderrama, Daryl Hannah, and Malin Akerman.

Special recognition awards were handed out on the night. Matt Damon received the Ongoing Commitment Honoree for his work with Water.org. Bill McKibben was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement. The Screen Actors Guild Awards were the Green Production Honorees. The Green Parent Award went to Anna Getty and Hayden Panettiere received the Futures Award, which recognizes younger entertainers for their potential to be environmental activists. While accepting the award for her work protecting and promoting the world’s ocean animals, Panettiere joked, “Twerking is not going to solve global warming.”
