Director Roland Emmerich recently called his planned Independence Day sequel a “daily battle.”

He spoke to Indie Wire while doing press for his film White House Down, currently preparing for release to DVD.

When asked explicitly about Will Smith’s involvement in the sequel to the 1996 sci-fi thriller, Emmerich wouldn’t answer.

He did, however, reveal that there are two scripts—one with Smith returning as Captain Steven Hiller, and one where his character isn’t involved at all.

The plot of both versions, written by White House Down’s James Vanderbilt, is still a mystery and Emmerich didn’t offer any details on any possible replacements for Smith.

A.V. Club reported last month that Emmerich met with Michael B. Jordan, star of Fruitvale Station, about a role in the next Independence Day. It was unclear whether Jordan would be the new star or if he was being considered for a supporting role.

Rumor has it that Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum will reappear in the upcoming film.

There seems to be only one thing for certain amidst the rumors: Emmerich has nixed his plan for a two-part sequel, or even a third movie.

“I thought about spending four years of my life on one movie and I didn’t want to turn into something from the movie. It’s a movie about aliens, I don’t want to turn into an alien,” he explained.

Independence Day 2 has a tentative release date of July 3, 2013.
