INTERVIEW: Jake Miller Talks Silver Lining II, Upcoming Tour, Lends Advice To Emerging Acts

Pop Heartthrob, Singer, Song writer, and producer Jake Miller just released his new album, Silver Lining II – A continuation of his 2018 album, Silver Lining. The album features 10 new tracks additional to the singles that he has put out over the course of the pandemic.

“Silver Lining II was written and recorded over the span of almost 2 years and is the sequel to my 2018 album, Silver Lining. This album is about finding the light in a world full of darkness. We all know how crazy the world is right now, so it’s more important than ever to appreciate the great things in your life rather than focusing on the negative. I’m so proud of this project and can’t wait to perform it live when I head back on tour in September. I hope you enjoy this album as much as I enjoyed creating it!” – Jake shared.

I missed everyone so much!”

Take a look at what Jake Miller had to say about the album and the upcoming tour.

PopWrapped (PW): We’ll dive into tour later, let’s jump right in and talk about the body of work. There’s a lot of upbeat, high energy tracks that fans know and love you for – However, you start this project with a slow, meaningful intro that talks about basically finding light in a dark time. & Finding your “Silver Lining”. How did the pandemic and now a relationship, affect your music. And artistry?

Jake Miller (JM): During this pandemic, making music and writing this album was an escape for me. I also spent a lot of time with my family and my girlfriend, just enjoying each other’s time. I feel like I grew a lot during these last 2 years and really shifted gears as to what’s truly important in life.

PW: I want to talk about “Click” a little bit. You talk about coming close to breaking and realizing that it will eventually work out, and “Click”. You’ve been steady releasing music, and touring for years. When did you realize that the music was finally starting to pay off for you? “Maybe it’s just not my time yet…” When faced with doubt, or a lack of reassurance, how do you get through that? What drives you to keep going and get through those times?

JM: As a musician, I am my harshest critic. Always striving for the next goal, and sometimes forgetting to enjoy the moment. Life is all about the journey, not the destination. Maybe things have already clicked and you didn’t even notice because you’re waiting for the next thing to click. So I wrote this song as a reminder to slow down and just enjoy where I am. My friends, family, and fans always inspire and motivate me to keep pushing when it gets hard.

PW: In “Simple Life” you talk about wanting just a normal life, traveling the world with your girlfriend, and just living life to the fullest.. You don’t live a simple life in the least – You are always working on music, touring, and keeping your fans hungry for what is next. If you WERE living a simple life, what do you think you would be doing full time, if music wasn’t working out?

JM: Music will always be a part of my life. Even if I wasn’t an artist and wasn’t in the spotlight, I would be writing and producing for other artists, or even making soundtracks for movies. Music is the only REAL passion that I’ve ever had and that will never change.

PW: Another standout track for me was “Stay True” – in this track you talk about being surrounded with people that are always pushing at you to do this or that, sign with bigger management names like Scooter Braun, etc. You have had the same team/circle for the majority of your career – who, from a fan perspective can say, we’ve grown to love. How exactly do you stay true to yourself and shut down those suggestions when you look at career and think about the career goals that you have?

JM: I’m a big believer that good things happen to good people. That’s the only rule I live by. So you can drive yourself crazy trying a million different things, or you can just keep your head down, work hard, make great music, and be a good person! I know that’s all I need to succeed. Labels, managers, agents… they all help a LOT. But the real reason I will succeed in life is through hard work and being a good human.

PW: For this project, we have the previously released singles, as well as 10 new tracks. What was the selection process like for this project? & of the tracks that you narrowed it down to, which ones standout to you & why?

JM: The album came together a bit randomly, as I collected songs for the past few years. But these 21 songs felt like they were cohesive and belonged on a project together. My favorite 3 tracks are Saved Me, Ross and Rachel, and Click.

PW: “Black Cloud” is much more upbeat from the other tracks we talked about, however, still follows a message of overcoming, and prevailing through dark moments. Shorter track, but the first listen really makes you take a second to step back, think about what’s important in life, and disconnect. It’s not easy to be vulnerable – what made you want to go this route with some of the tracks?

JM: Even though it’s easy to make your life look perfect online, I’m a human just like everyone else. I have bad days where I doubt everything. My future, my talent, my work ethic. But “Black Cloud” is just about running from that doubt in your mind and just focusing on good energy. I always feel like the battery in my heart is reset when I spend a night at the beach, which is why I included that lyric in the 2nd verse. I also sing about only surrounding yourself with people you love. These are all things for me that push away my doubt and insecurities.

PW: Let’s wrap things up and talk about the tour. You are taking Fly By Midnight with you on the road, alongside Just Seconds Apart and Band Of Silver in select dates – when it comes to tour planning, what is your process like for selecting supporting acts?

JM: Well, Fly By Midnight happens to be my best friends, so having them open the tour was the easiest decision of my life. I can’t wait to get back on the road and sharing a bus with them is just a huge bonus. And I can’t wait to see the energy they bring to the stage every night.

PW: You have worked with the Fly By Guys on a few tracks, can fans expect some performances WITH them on this tour? Additionally, When did you know, “Ok I have to take them on tour with me”?

JM: After hanging with them over the pandemic so much and realizing how similar we all are, I knew they would quickly become some of my best friends. We will definitely perform “Automatic” together plus maybe a cover.
