Interview: Tommy Boi’s Stunning New Single, “Blessing In Disguise”

Tommy Boi talks new single, Blessing In Disguise.

Emerging popstar, Tommy Boi is back with his first track of 2020, “Blessing In Disguise”. The emerging California singer and songwriter has already made quite the impact with his tracks, “You Never Called Back” and “Glue” which have surpassed 1 Million streams on music platforms.

Though surpassing 1 million, Tommy still has aways to go before he hits mainstream status — which won’t be long. With his latest, Blessing In Disguise, Tommy combines stunning lyrics with a beautiful and simple (yet powerful) production.

“This song is about facing your true inner self and praying to god that person can see the light of day. Praying that the person inside banging to be free actually makes it out. As the child of two pastors, I grew up in a very Christian household. I was doing all the right things in their eyes and was kind of a golden boy. But there came the point where I fell in love with a boy, and after that, I went through a couple of really tough years battling coming out publicly and being rejected by a lot of the community I was raised in,” Tommy noted.

PopWrapped (PW): “Blessing in Disguise” is the first single you’ve released since “You Never Called Back” in 2019. They both are similar yet so different, how did you know that this track was the perfect follow up to that release?

Tommy Boi (TB): Honestly, after “YNCB” came out, I felt really free to just continue making super vulnerable songs. “Blessing in Disguise” definitely falls in that category of vulnerability so it felt like the perfect song to follow up “YNCB.” I wanted the song to help lead my listeners into a lighter space while still maintaining that raw emotion.

PW: “Blessing in Disguise” talks about falling and accepting that it could be a blessing in disguise. How do you know when your failures are actually blessings? Is there anything personally that you have been through that inspired the message of this track?

TB: “I sing a line in the bridge that says, “You never really know until you know…” I’ve had to accept that control is a facade and whatever is meant to be will be. I think failure is a part of growing. It’s honestly how you learn. So don’t stress so much and just love on yourself! Failures can be a blessing if you learn from them.”

PW: This new track is a track that is in support of a community we are both a part of, the LGBTQ community. Coming out and accepting yourself wasn’t an easy thing for you. When did you know that it was time, and what made you want that to be part of the inspiration for this track?

TB: ” I think I just got to the point where I decided that I deserved to be in love and happy. After I fell in love with a boy the first time, I knew I wanted to tell my loved ones about it. That sort of began the process of like, “Damn, I’m in love with a boy. What do I do with this? Is my family going to accept me? Will my friends?” All of those thoughts were running through my head. There were some tough times to follow but I feel like I’m far enough down the road from when I came out to write a song about that journey. I feel very blessed now but it wasn’t easy getting to this point. “

PW: “Everytime we fall, I just pray that it’s a Blessing in Disguise” is a powerful line in this track, one I can resonate with. Every time I fall, the first thing I do is pray that it’s going to make sense later and that it has happened for a reason. How do you deal with failure? How do you make sure that the next time (in whatever you failed at) you are successful?

TB: “I think it’s actually necessary to fail because that’s when you learn the most. It’s the people that aren’t willing to learn from failure that never find success.”
