Irish singer-songwriter Hozier has made a powerful statement against homophobia with his new EP Take Me to Church.

In response to the increasing hostility and violence in Russia over gay rights, the artist has released a video of the title track which centers on two gay men and their community’s homophobic response after discovering their sexuality.

Both a moving testament to same-sex love and illustration of the country’s current anti-gay sentiments, he states that the video, “references the recent increase of organized attacks and torturing of homosexuals in Russia, which is subsequent to a long, hateful, and oppressive political campaign against the LGBT community.”

Hozier calls the increasing violence against the LGBT community in Russia “… no less than nightmareish,” and says, “The song was always about humanity at its most natural, and how that is undermined ceaselessly by religious organizations and those who would have us believe they act in its interests.”

The video for Take Me to Church was directed by Brendan Canty of Feel Good Lost. You can check out the moving video below. Hozier will be making his US live debut this March.
