Is There A Female Thor in the MCU’s Future?

With the new Thor movie heading into theaters soon, and it looks like there is some potential to adapt the new female Thor to the big screen.

With the new Thor movie heading into theaters soon, now seems the perfect time to look at the future of the God of Thunder and where he’ll be in a post Infinity War Marvel Cinematic Universe. While we’d all no doubt miss Chris Hemsworth, it looks like there is some potential to adapt the new female Thor to the big screen.

Hitting the page in 2014, the new female Thor was described as, “No longer is the classic male hero able to hold the mighty hammer, Mjölnir, a brand new female hero will emerge who will be worthy of the name THOR. Who is she? Where did she come from and what is her connection to Asgard and the Marvel Universe?”

Those keeping up with comic book news now knows that the female Thor was later identified as Jane Foster, who in the MCU is played by actress Natalie Portman. Though she isn’t returning for the new Ragnarok film, the character is definitely well known to both film and comic Marvel fans, meaning after some potential recasting, she could theoretically take up the Thor mantel. When asked about the potential to bring the female Thor to the big screen, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige had this to say.

“We always look back to the comics to get those ideas … sometimes very specific storylines like ‘Civil War,’ sometimes just nuggets or characters like ‘Planet Hulk. So anything that’s happened in the comics, even a female Thor, become great potentials and the ideas from which future movies can be born.’”

While this would definitely be a step in the right direction, I don’t have my hopes up. The upcoming Ant Man and the Wasp will be the first time an MCU film has a woman in the title, and a Black Widow film has been talked about for years now. Still, its nice to imagine a world in which we could have a bad ass Goddess of Thunder on the big screen.
