This. Is. Not. A. Drill. EW is reporting, and Madame Shonda Rhimes has herself confirmed, that Isaiah Washington’s Dr. Preston Burke will be returning to Grey’s Anatomy in a May episode.

Washington’s character was an integral part of the storyline before he was terminated after Season 3 as a result of homophobic slurs directed at then costar TR Knight. His final scene was leaving Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) at the altar.

Oh will be leaving Grey’s at the end of this season, and Rhimes believes that bringing Dr. Burke back is the only surefire way to ensure that the brilliant character of Cristina Yang will find some closure.

”It’s important to me that Cristina’s journey unfolds exactly as it should,” Rhimes said. “Burke is vital to that journey — he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang.”

Burke had a profound effect on the already icy Yang, further cementing her heart behind an impenetrable fortress. I am nearly drooling just imagining what a splendid forty minutes of television it is going to be.
