Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City’s Adam Young might lose out on over $800,000 worth of royalties for their number 1 song “Good Time,” which was they released in 2012.

After the song achieved international fame, the duo was soon told that they were being sued by singer-songwriter Ally Burnett, who believed that the song infringed the copyright of her own song entitled “Ah, It’s A Love Song.” This all happened back in 2012, but today it was announced that both sides finally came to an agreement: Burnett will drop her lawsuit, while over 800,000 dollars worth of royalties are put in escrow until it is determined whether or not Burnett’s copyright was truly infringed.

This means that for now, the money will be unattainable for all parties involved, remaining in a safe bank account until it is established who will wind up with the money.

The songs certainly have some similarities, with both of them using the same pitch sequences, melodic contour and rhythmic construction, but whether that is enough to make the $800K go to Burnett remains to be seen. It was also reported that Burnett suffered “emotional and psychological damage” due to fans of the song “Good Time” accusing her of copying the song.

Have a listen to the two songs below and decide for yourself! What do you think? Did the successful duo copy the song, or should they be allowed to keep the money? Let us know!
