The Chicago River is green, but don’t be alarmed, it’s not because of toxic run-off, an alien virus, or Loki’s sorcery. The river’s new hue was all part of Saturday’s kick-off of festivities for Chicago’s massive St. Patrick’s Day weekend celebration.
The dyeing of the river is a yearly tradition for Chicago celebrators, who also enjoyed a rollicking parade featuring bagpipes, dancers, floats, bands, and other Celtic entertainment for all the lads and lasses gathered ‘round. Spectators joined in on the fun sporting the usual assortment of fun, tacky green gear including wigs, glasses, costumes, hats, and various plastic beads and baubles.
And of course beer was in plentiful supply during the events as bars along the parade route kept revelers well-fueled for the merriment.
Maybe St. Patrick himself also decided to jump in and give a blessing of good weather, as the Windy City got a break from winter and enjoyed a sunny, somewhat mild day for the celebrations.
If you’d like to get your St. Patty’s Day groove on Chicago-style, parades will also be held on Sunday, and we’re guessing the party will also still be very much in full swing throughout St. Patrick’s Day itself on Monday.
If you can’t make it to Chicago, how will you be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day? Let us know in the comments, and remember to stay safe!
