Since its an almost certainty that J. J. Abrams will not be retaining the captain’s chair to direct the third installment of the Star Trek series. This is due to his commitment to the newest film in the Star Wars franchise. Since then, rumors have been flying about who would or could be a worthy successor for Abrams.
HitFix recently spoke to Abrams at the release party for Star Trek: Into Darkness on DVD and Blu-Ray, where he discussed the rumor of director Rupert Wyatt (Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes) being considered to fill the director’s chair for Star Trek 3.
“I know Rupert a little bit and he’s incredibly talented. We’d be lucky to have someone as talented as Rupert,” Abrams said.
He continued: “But there are things that we are focusing on right now before the director, which is the fundamentals of where the story is going to go.”
It’s interesting to note that IMDB already lists Rupert Wyatt as the director of Star Trek 3. This is despite the fact that no official announcement has been made concerning a director.
With no director at the helm, and no idea who and when the successor will be, the release date for the film could be lost in a galaxy far, far away.
